For this student project, the goal was to create a complex invitation for a high profile client that included die cuts, foiling techniques, or embossing. The client I chose was the House of Mata Hari Speakeasy in Savannah, Georgia. For those that are unfamiliar, the Mata Hari is an exclusive club that is set in the 1920’s prohibition era located off of River Street, serving fine cocktails and requiring a key and password for entrance.
When Designing the invitation, I wanted to do something that reflected well on their brand and stuck to the 1920’s theme that their speakeasy is so deeply rooted in. I chose to foil all of my typography and a pattern that drew inspiration from 1920’s art deco in gold and used a black paper with a slightly metallic sheen. Since the key is an essential aspect of the speakeasy’s exclusivity, I wanted to center my design around the reveal of the key. To accomplish this, I created a shadow box with multiple layers of die cut pattern that the invitation would pull out from, revealing the speakeasy key.
